Frequently Asked Questions

What makes COLOURLOCK stand out from other brands?

We make professional leather care simple. COLOURLOCK products use the same chemistry trusted by global manufacturers but are packaged and explained for anyone to use at home. Our products are developed through decades of material science used by leading automotive and furniture manufacturers, but simplified for real-world use. Every recommendation we make is backed by workshop testing, practical training, and support when you need it.

What if I make a mistake during application? Can it be fixed?

Yes, most errors can be corrected. If colour goes on unevenly or too heavy, you can gently remove by wiping away with a damp cloth while before curing. Because our products are water-based and forgiving before full cure, you have room to correct as you go. And if you’re unsure, our local support team can guide you step-by-step.

Do you offer help if I’m unsure mid-project?

Absolutely. If you get stuck or unsure mid-project, our team is here to help. You can reach out with photos or questions, and we’ll guide you through the next step . Whether you need help identifying your leather type or troubleshooting during application, our team can assist by email or phone with practical, experience-based advice.

How do I know which Colourlock kit is right for my leather?

Each COLOURLOCK kit is designed for a specific type of leather and level of repair. Our Clean & Care kits are ideal for regular maintenance on furniture, car seats, and handbags, while the Leather Fresh DIY kits restore colour and finish. Kits are grouped by leather type (pigmented, aniline, or coated) and purpose (cleaning, restoring, or protecting).

If you’re unsure, simply click the “Ask the Team” button - one of our experts will help you choose the right kit for your leather.

Can I actually do this at home without special tools?

Yes, you can! Our DIY systems are designed so anyone can achieve professional-looking results without specialist tools. The kits include everything you need, and our support team is always available if you want guidance along the way. Have access to a spray gun? You can use that too for a pro-style finish.

How do I identify my leather type?

Try the water-drop test in a hidden area: quick darkening suggests aniline/suede/nubuck (open-pore); no change suggests pigmented or semi-aniline (sealed).

Suede/nubuck feels velvety; aniline shows natural pore variation; pigmented feels more uniform and slightly coated. Use products labelled for your leather type - open-pore leathers need gentler care and different protection.

Can I use these products on furniture, car seats, and other items?

Definitely. Our products are formulated for use across a wide range of leather applications - from automotive and furniture to handbags, jackets, boat seats and even rated for aircraft. The key is identifying your leather type first so you can choose the most suitable kit.

Are your products safe to use indoors or in small spaces?

Yes. They’re water-based, low-odour formulas suitable for indoor/garage use with normal ventilation. While wet, wipe away gently with a damp cloth. If already dry, allow full dry, do a light sand to level, and re-apply thinly. Most issues (patchiness, small runs) come from applying too thick; thin coats are easier to correct and yield better results.

Basic PPE, gloves and a simple mask if sensitive, is recommended.

How close will the colour match be?

Our manufacturer formulas are aimed for achieving the original factory tone. However, sun, heat, and wear can shift your current shade. For small touch-ups, factory formulas blend well into newer leather types after proper prep and thin coats. For a perfect match on noticeably aged areas, send a small sample for custom matching; otherwise consider recolouring the full panel for a uniform look.

Can I fix a tear or hole?

Through-tears typically need backing fabric + adhesive and are beyond a basic dye kit. Very small nicks can sometimes be stabilised with minimal filler, but larger structural damage is a job for a pro or an advanced repair kit. If the leather is missing material, colour alone won’t bridge the gap. Contact our technical support team for any questions like these! We're always here to help.

Do I need to apply a topcoat or sealer after recolouring with the Leather Fresh Kit?

Not necessarily! Leather Fresh is an all-in-one formula that already includes colour, binders, and a protective topcoat - no extra sealer needed. It’s designed for easy DIY use with lasting results. For users with spray equipment, an optional professional topcoat can be added afterward for enhanced wear resistance or sheen control.

How long does it take for products to dry or cure fully?

Drying times vary by temperature and humidity, but most products dry to the touch within 10–15 minutes. Speed up drying gently with a hair dryer or warm airflow if needed. You can usually apply additional layers straight after its dry or start light use after an hour. Full curing takes around 24–48 hours, after which the finish reaches maximum durability.

How often should I clean or condition my leather to keep it looking good?

We recommend cleaning your leather every 3–6 months, or more often for high-use areas like car seats, armrests, or lounges. Always clean before conditioning, and reapply a protector or conditioner afterward to keep the surface supple and resistant to wear. Regular care helps prevent fading, cracking, and premature ageing.

Will these products change the feel or softness of the leather?

No, our products are formulated to preserve the original feel of your leather. Water-based dyes and pH neutral cleaners maintain flexibility and comfort. Any slight change in texture after recolouring will settle within a few days as the finish cures and the leather is conditioned.

Can these same products be used by professionals too?

Yes, they can — but our Professional Range is built for more advanced work. The DIY products are simplified versions of the same chemistry, made for home use with fewer steps. Professionals use the extended system with additional binders, pigments, and coatings to achieve a full factory-level restoration for heavier wear or commercial environments.

What’s the difference between your DIY kits and the professional range?

Our DIY kits are made for convenience - they use the same high-quality formulations found in our professional products but simplified into fewer steps. Each kit includes everything you need for cleaning, prepping, and recolouring in one system.
The
Professional Range is designed for trained users who need to restore heavily worn or high-value leather. It involves additional binders, primers, pigments, and topcoats that allow for full factory refinishing and custom colour matching.

Do you offer training or certification for professionals?

Yes. COLOURLOCK Australia offers hands-on training and certification for professionals in automotive, furniture, and restoration industries. Our courses cover cleaning, prep, repair, and recolouring using professional-grade systems. Training is held all around Australia and includes practical demonstrations, product handling, and colour-matching techniques.
